Paying It Forward

Bronson’s baby girl, Mackenzie Friedman, affectionately known as Mighty Mack, was diagnosed at 4 months with the most aggressive form of Leukemia – AML MLL M10. Since then, Mack has spent most of her life in hospital fighting not only the cursed cancer but multiple other life-threatening infections. The only chance of eradicating this variant of leukaemia is a bone transplant. Mack successfully underwent a bone marrow transplant in January this year and is now cancer free. Her recovery exceeded everyone’s expectations but wouldn’t have been possible without the resources that were made available to the family at Donald Gordon Hospital.

Bronson’s own treacherous journey as a parent to a child with cancer has inspired him to assist others going through the same affliction. As such, Legacy is dedicated to supporting Rainbows and Smiles and we encourage our clients to take the time to read through the foundation’s incredible efforts to make the trials of those impacted by this disease less burdensome.

Did you know that by donating to a foundation, your company can qualify for SED points or a tax-deductible certificate, also known as a Section 18A.

In order to qualify, donations need to be made prior to the tax period concludes. Corporate Companies will also receive our Level 1 B-BBEE certificate which will assist with their B-BBEE SED (Socio-Economic Development) status.

Every year in South Africa, almost 1000 children are diagnosed with cancer.
Experts estimate that around two-thirds of childhood cancers in our country remain unreported, which means that in reality closer to 3000 children every year actually get cancer. Just not all will get a chance to fight it.

RAINBOWS AND SMILES

Rainbows and Smiles is a community-based, charitable foundation dedicated to providing emotional, social, and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer or a life-threatening illness, and their families and caregivers.
The organisation is inspired by the life of Jed Brady Suckling, son of Bonita Suckling, the founder. Jed bravely battled a brain cancer called Anaplastic Astrocytoma for more than three years. He was a little boy who loved giving gifts, and one of his greatest joys was to make his friends smile while they were in hospital being treated. Rainbows and Smiles was inspired by Jed’s love language of giving gifts and was established in 2009.
Today, volunteers in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, and Durban continue the mission of Rainbows and Smiles across those cities and have provided support to hundreds of children and their families.
The foundation works with healthcare professionals at various treatment centres to assist where they can with complementary support and care for child cancer warriors and their families. Wherever possible, they collaborate and communicate with other like-minded local and global organisations to ease the burden of childhood cancer on families.

Children diagnosed with cancer are referred to Rainbows and Smiles through word of mouth, social media, doctors, or the hospital treatment centres. After meeting the children and their families, different types of support are provided throughout the child’s treatment. The sad reality of childhood cancer is that some children will not survive it, and we work with organisations in the community to promote professional counselling for children and their families and caregivers in the case that a child’s illness is terminal, or when one of our child heroes dies
